If the evaporator coil is frozen how do I thaw it
My home a/c stopped working right today. The condensor is coming on and the
blower is coming on but the air is not blowing hard out of the vents, and
the air is cold too. l inspected my filter and it is filthy but
unfortunately it is too late to get a new one so I will have to wait till
tomorrow. l can not see the coil itself cause my system is too complicated
for me but l noticed that the copper tube running into where the coil is
had ice around it. Is that normal or does that suggest that the coil looks like that as well? If so can l just leave the a/c off for the night and let it thaw?
As said above; you may be low on freon.. that can cause icing
problems.
To thaw them out fast, turn the AC off, & flip the blower switch to the on
position. That will blow warm air through the coil without it being
chilled, melting the ice dam fast. It usually takes mine about 20
minutes to be done with. After the water stops flowing out the condensate drain, you can turn ur AC back on again. I have to do this when it gets humid here, usually once a day. I have an old unit that I can not afford to replace right now.
You also may need to have the system recharged with
refrigerant. That also causes freezing because the evaporation cycle can
not operate efficiently. Just let the ice thaw out, clean the filter you
have and see if it does the same thing tomorrow
Not only is the filter dirty but there is a radiator like thing
in the ac unit and it can be completely clogged. My mothers ac had 2
inches of cat hair on hers and it behaved the same way. AC repair man
cleaned it and it work like a new system.
Most likely the system is working much too hard, especially
with having a dirty filter.
Yes the coils can freeze up occassionally, especially when the unit is
having to work too hard.
You made a good call, turn off the a/c unit, it should thaw by the time you replace the filter. Then turn it back on. Things should be fine.
